Life Unexpected
The greatest thing in the world is not so much where we are, but in what direction we are moving. – Oliver Wendell Holmes
Oh what a difference a purpose will make in your life! Let me give the above quote in its entirety. “I find that the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand as in what direction we are moving: To reach the port of heaven, we must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it— but we must sail, and not drift, nor lie at anchor.” Wow! We cannot simply “we must sail, and not drift or lie at anchor”. Now that implies that we must do something to power the direction of our own lives! Life can be a magnificent journey. It can take the most awesome unexpected twists and turns. However, to experience all that God has planned for us. We must first find our purpose and live it passionately! And it doesn’t matter where you are now; if you’re 20 or 60 you can start right here.
Let me give you just a few examples: Susan Boyle whose desire was to be a professional singer at the age of 47 rose to international prominence when she wowed the judges and the audience on the reality television show Britain’s Got Talent singing “I Dreamed a Dream” from the musical Les Miserables. Boyle had a quiet life at home caring for her ailing mother. She was unemployed at the time she auditioned, and kept busy by volunteering at her local church. Her first album, I Dreamed a Dream, was released in 2009 and has since sold more than 3 million copies, making Boyle one of the highest-selling debut artists in decades. Martha Stewart was a stockbroker at the age of 30. Stewart and her husband purchased and restored a farmhouse in Connecticut where she transitioned into a domestic lifestyle. She would later turn a catering business into a multimedia empire worth over $700 million in retail sales. Colonel Sanders, otherwise known as Harland Sanders, was the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken and its famous seasoned chicken. He worked as a farmer, streetcar driver, enlisted in the army, steamboat driver and attorney just to name a few. Although he was always a cook, he didn’t harness his talent for commercial use until he was over 40 years of age. Remarkably, Sanders took to franchising Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants, starting at age 65, using $105 from his first Social Security check to fund visits to potential franchisees.
Who says that our dreams should have an expiration date on them? The above examples show that if we keep moving in the direction of our hearts desires, God’s plan will be delivered. Take a long honest look at where you want your life to take you. If you are not happy with the direction or where you currently are, then you must do something that you have probably never done before. Grab a hold of that thing that makes your heart pound with excitement and allow it to take you on a journey that you won’t regret.
